This September, my mate Mike Williams and I are premiering our live documentary/slide night on steroids, 24 Hours in Kings Cross, at Sydney Fringe Festival.
We spent 24 straight hours shooting photos and recording interviews in an effort to understand what Sydney’s infamous red light district is all about. We’ll present our findings over eight nights from September 10-20 at Sean and Dolly’s. Expect street photography, storytelling, crazy characters, costumes, live music and more.
We’d love if you came to check it out one night: if you get your tickets now and use the code ‘cokesign’, you’ll get a special 20% earlybird discount.
If you’re still not sold, then I thought I’d give you a preview of a few of the images I captured on that long summer day, starting with what might be my favourite: a friendly bloke I snapped in front of the Coke Sign at sunset.
I’m also quite partial to this huge set of rubber tits, which were attached to a fabulous drag queen we met out the front of Dulcie’s at some point late in the night (it all gets a bit blurry).
Of course, our travels led us into backpacker hostels, tattoo joints, strip clubs and more. Top tip: never ask a sex shop clerk who’s buying industrial-size lube bottles if you don’t want to know the answer.
But the Cross isn’t all neon and sex anymore. Most of the time it’s activewear and fluffy little dogs. Don’t worry, we caught that scene too.
Not to mention more exotic pets.
I can’t give away all the good stuff now, though. Come and see the show LIVE to find out what it’s like inside a tattoo parlour at midnight, meet the residents of Australia’s only nursing home for people at risk of homelessness and hear the worst interview of all time with a stripper at Showgirls.
See you there!
